It's the fundamental assumption of the system that the population's overall playing strength stays about the same, which just isn't true when you consider just how many fast-improving players there are relative to fast-worsening players.

(A minor point with regard to Gawain's proposals, by the way: they're not self-consistent - the British Isles has way more than 50 active GMs and IMs.)Jack Ruddhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17433574267085964238noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37675897.post-74940753512206927102012-08-07T16:47:18.725+01:002012-08-07T16:47:18.725+01:00Great interview.Great interview.Tom Chivershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09850710685193416732noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37675897.post-37271034548817200682012-08-07T16:35:37.252+01:002012-08-07T16:35:37.252+01:00I've never understood this whole "not pla...I've never understood this whole "not playing in Opens because of the danger to my rating" thing. The rating indicates one's current playing strength relative to the competition. If one's playing strength has not changed, he should expect to be able to at least maintain his/her current rating without too much trouble, correct? Or is there something broken about the rating system that makes it more likely to go down, regardless of whether the player is playing "up to strength"?RuralRobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15312167543048942606noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37675897.post-58624927863465905652012-08-07T13:46:16.970+01:002012-08-07T13:46:16.970+01:00PS: Other S&BC Blog interviews can be found he...PS: Other S&BC Blog interviews can be found here.Jonathan Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00293162543015231439noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37675897.post-60006650241641369062012-08-07T11:41:21.829+01:002012-08-07T11:41:21.829+01:00Thanks to Gawain for answering the questions and P...Thanks to Gawain for answering the questions and Phil for asking them.
