Black to play - how should the game go? II

  1. Well after 2. dxc5 black can rescue the a8 bishop and the endgame looks much better for him after, say, 2...Bc6 - at the very worst.

    So white is obliged to snaffle the bishop with 2. Rxa8. After that, I reckon white is surviving after 2... cxd4 3.Nxb5, so that obliges 2...Bxc3. Then 3.bxc3 looks necessary which can then be met by 3...cxd4 saccing the sleeping knight to get the pawns rolling and I think there's no defence against them.

    So my mainline is 1...c5 2.Rxa8 Bxc3 3.bxc3 cxd4 4. Resigns.

    This is without computer and moderately hungover, btw, so no laughing at the back if it's horribly wrong!

  4. (Whether or not it's any good) I had worked out the

    1. ... c5
    2. Rxa8 Bxc3
    3. Rxb8 Bxb2
    4. Rxb5 Bxd4

    variation myself before I saw the most recent comment. I'm not sure why Black would want to play 5. ... g4 though. Or am I missing something?

  5. The solution (and explanation) will appear some time next week, by the way.

    I'm not sure what the computer is trying to say. But anyway, it's a puzzle for solution, so computer analyses are not entirely a good idea here.

  6. I thought 3. Rxb8 lost to 3...cxd4. But I guess not.
