Best Chess Video Ever?

You've seen a lot of chess videos here at S&BCC over the years. But I reckon this one beats them all:

Especially with the music playing at top volume.

Extra nerd points if, like me, you had no problem identifying the game being played out.

  1. No nerd points for me, but do I get culture points for instantly recognsing the piece, the wider work of which it comprises a part and the name of the composer?

  2. Meanwhile in less cultured news, I'm told Paddy Power are offering 10/1 against Kramnik winning game seven.

  3. Points indeed. In fact! ---- what is the music?

  4. It's the noisy stuff you hear when you turn on the loudspeakers.

  5. It would be courteous, imho, to credit to John Upham who found this video and first posted it to the ECF & Atticus forums on Monday

  6. It would be, David, had I located it in either of those places. In fact in came to me via Google Alert, an automatic service I don't feel obliged need to credit.

  7. I had never previously considered David Robertson an authority in the field of personal courtesy, which goes to show just how wrong you can be about people.

Still, if we're doing acknowledgements, I got the Paddy Power tip off the Professor himself.

  8. ....though, in fact, it's not as good a tip as I previously thought, since the colours switch and Kramnik has Black....

  9. Suspiciously, this video also appeared on Susan Polgar's blog on Monday, here.

But she doesn't credit John Upham either! Just someone supposedly called "Alf" from Norway. (yeah, right...)

  10. If David is referring to this post here on the ECF Forum...

    ...then...umm...it's actually a different video.

  11. Easy to see how they could be confused!

  12. Classic! I loved it! Thanks for posting!

  13. In my earlier post, I was trying to be helpful, protecting the S & B blog from the charge it has rightly levelled against others: namely, not citing sources (and worse). In haste, looking only at the starting point on screen, I assumed the two videos in question were the same. Indeed they aren't. My mistake; my apols.

  14. No problem David.

    So, anyone know the game?

    Anyone else know the music?

    Anyone know BOTH??

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well, the music is The Hall of the Mountain King from Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite.

I only know the game because Tom told me, so I'll let him or somebody else do the telling!

But it is, I can tell you, worthy of many, many nerd points indeed.

  16. I think all is explained here:

    2001: A Chess Space Odyssey

If so, I would like to claim the points!

  17. I confess that I did not know the game - but the video was also posted today on Dennis Monokroussos's blog, and he identifies it for us.

However, perhaps there are bonus points available for digging out the Mali connection...?

  18. I believe the game was from 2001.

    That's a big enough clue ...

  19. If so, I would like to claim the points!

Can you claim points when you're anonymous?

  20. Apologies for lurking! I'd like to claim the points...
