This is not a blog post

All money raised is distributed in 4 ways-
1. Nigel's fee
2. Travel and accommodation expenses
3. Charity donation (probably an HIV or homelessness charity - I'll let the juniors at one of the simuls decide)
4. The remainder to be donated to the British Championships 2011 to help with reduced entry fees for juniors

(my emphasis - JMGB)

Donation for British Championships - £1500

The income I was able to secure [for the British Championship - JMGB] was -

£1500 - Staunton Memorial Dinner
£15000 - Sponsorship
£1000 - JRT
£16835 - Donation

I believe there was about a £4000 surplus from last year's tournament which was also used

There was £500 from the simul tour but I instead gave that to Women's Chess instead

I hope everyone has enjoyed this year's tournament [The British Championships - JMGB] which I, and others, have been working to support financially for a long time (both the Staunton Dinner and Nigel tour made significant contributions to both the Championships and charity)

Those "basic accounts for the British Championships" are so basic that they're not actually accounts at all but the bit that leaps out at me is the queston of the four grand surplus from the previous year's tournament. Did this year's tournament produce a surplus when all was said and done, or was the four grand from last year used to plug a hole in this year's figures?

Talking of accounts ...

Instead of being given back to the ECF, the four thousand profit from Canterbury was allocated to support this year's Congress. If you invite and pay for GMs, you need to tell them up front that you can pay for them. I don't think this year's accounts for the Congress have been published yet, there might be an interim statement at the AGM. With near record numbers, you might hope that this year's event also made a profit which will probably be rolled forward to finance North Shields.

Thanks anonymous, you sound like you're in the know. Do you reckon the ECF will be taking a view on the desirability or otherwise of a fundraising event for the British that
did/
did not/
might have done/
might have done a

raised some cash for Sheffield?

Or, for that matter, the desirability or otherwise of a funds being raised for the British then being spent elsewhere (or not, as the case may be)?

The impression I get is that the financing of the British in 2011 was something of a personal objective by CJ. With much of the expenditure (I would assume) being on hotel accommodation for the GMs, the ECF may not have been directly involved.

It was a bit chicken and egg. If you need a strong GM field for sponsors, you need sponsors for a strong GM field.

Yes, all that's entirely possible. It would be useful to actually know this, though, particularly when

(a) the impression has been given that the top GMs were funded from either CJ's pocket or from sponsorship that he located ;

(b) the impression has also been given that what is said one day is different to what is said the next. This is not, in my view, an entirely helpful way to deal with matters financial.
