Quick update

Do you remember the Brixton speed chess player, about whom we wrote last month, claiming to be a Jamaican speed chess champion raising money to go and visit his ailing father?

We can provide you with more recent news. He was spotted the other day - in Cardiff. Last year (see the video in the previous post) he was in Edinburgh - this year, he's been seen in London and Cardiff. I wonder whether he tours the whole of Britain, or just the various capitals? Does he do day-trips to Paris and Brussels?

I wonder, too - how long he has been doing this? Is his father actually ill? How good is he? Somebody, surely, must recognise him. So - who is he really?

If he's still raising money a year on I think we can assume his father is either

(a) better now
(b) pushing up the daisies
(c) not unwell in the first place.

I spoke to him last month as he was preparing to leave Stockwell Station and asked him What Grade would Jamaicas No 1 be . He said about 2000 , but I wondered if he was being modest .

Yes I and many other players are of the wrong nationality. Despite having a rating that is nothing in Britain, I would make the teams of around half the countries in the Olympiad. Looks like I could also make the Jamaica team. Watford chess club used to have a member of the Zimbabwae team, who couldn't make the Watford first team! There are probably about 20% of 4 board olympiad teams, that wouldn't make the 12 board Streatham 1st team.

Andrew - did you ever play when Abnet Bekele was playing for us? He played for Ethiopia in the Olympiad and played a few games for S&B in the London and Surrey Leagues.

Presumably if we'd been born in other countries (well, SOME other countries) we'd not be likely to be as good chess players as we are give that we're from Britain.

(lack of opportunities, lack of competition, etc etc).

Perhaps we should club together, buy our own island, and enter the olympiad as our own nationality?

ejh-no don't think so, jonathan-fair point. I think buying the island could be kinda expensive between only 4 of us though. Think I might be able to get in the Japan side, so perhaps should go there (wouldn't be the first Englishman to do so).

My old landlord when I lived in Oxford, a 170 player, used to know a bloke who played for (I think) the US Virgin Islands in the Olympiad.

Hilarious! I've got a couple of posts about this guy. The most recent one I made I think is this. His name, btw, is Pablo Williams. I believe he's actually a Kiwi.

Ah, excellent, thanks!

I wonder who "if" is in your comments?

I note from this page that Andrew Smith plays for Jersey. Which might make him the only regular Haldane Hacker to play in the Olympiad.
